Sherrill becomes first N.J. Democrat House member to call for Biden to drop out

The Democrat infighting is ramping up, Save Jerseyans, and I’m here for it!

On Tuesday, after a reportedly ugly meeting of newly-returned U.S. House Democrats in Washington, D.C., Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-11) became the first New Jersey Democrat in Congress to call on Joe Biden to abandon his 2024 reelection campaign.

In her statement, the Montclair-based Democrat complained that “the stakes are too high — and the threat is too real — to stay silent.”

“I know that President Biden and his team have been true public servants and have put the country and the best interests of democracy first and foremost in their considerations,” Sherrill continued. “And because I know President Biden cares deeply about the future of our country, I am asking that he declare that he won’t run for reelection and will help lead us through a process toward a new nominee.”

While many in the Media have called on Biden to step aside, relatively few high-ranking Democrat officials have been willing to go on record calling for the incumbent president’s ouster from the ticket following a disastrous late June debate performance. At least one New Jersey Democrat criticized Sherrill’s decision to ditch the Biden campaign.

“Participated in a conference call with President Biden this evening…Sending campaign a check will help any way possible …Either Trump or Biden…I am with the President…never want to rely on Mikie Sherrill for back up,” tweeted Elizabeth, N.J. Mayor Chris Bollwage.

Sherill represents a relatively affluent North Jersey district centered on Morris County that grew considerably more “blue” in the recent redistricting process; it reelected Sherrill with 59% of the vote in 2022. But the polling at 30,000 feet has darkened for Biden, and two consecutive surveys in New Jersey have found Trump ahead (albeit narrowly) in a state not carried by a Republican since 1988.
