Remember way back in March when the State Senate was about to take up and pass a telecommunications deregulation bill? Well they never did. Left wing groups had jumped all over S. 2664 from the start, and despite the fact that it passed the Assembly with an incredible 66-7 bipartisan vote, was tabled for a later date.
It now seems that the bill will be coming up again before the end of the lame duck session. How do I know this? Its certainly not because the Senate is making a big deal about the bill (although they should), but merely because the attack ads have already started spreading misinformation yet again.
One group you have probably never heard of, AARP, is running ads to scare seniors into thinking that this bill is somehow going to raise telephone bills and kidnap their grandchildren. Neither of these things are true. In fact, similar deregulation bills in other states, such as Indiana, have been shown to lower costs and improve choice and competition in the telecommunications industry. More competition means greater investment, improved services, improved infrastructure, and of course, lower prices. I think that members of all parties and political persuasion can agree that a better business climate leading to better prices and better competition is just what New Jersey needs, and that includes our seniors.
The fact is, our telecommunications regulations as they currently stand are older than rotary phones. It is time to bring our regulations into the present so New Jersey can help lead telco advancements into the future. Call your State Senator and remind them to vote yes when this bill comes up for a vote early in the new year.
Geez…when are you guys going to employ a proofreader for your posts? Or, at least have someone other than the writer go through it before you post it up….it should read "passed"…not "past".
Also, this bill is opposed by the New Jersey League of Municipalities, along with AARP.
