When we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address next November (2013), the only black United States Senator will be a Republican. From South Carolina… where the American Civil War began. Somewhere, Abraham Lincoln is smiling ear to ear!
Within the last hour, major media outlets have reported that Rep. Tim Scott (R-SC) will take the retiring Jim DeMint’s seat in Congress. Governor Haley is expected to make a formal announcement shortly.
The new Senator won’t have a honeymoon period. He’s up for a full term in a special election, and the U.S. is facing questions of extraordinary gravity. There’s no denying the trouble facing our republic. Fiscally, economically, and culturally. Fiscal cliffs and mass shootings aren’t going to solve themselves.
Perhaps a top notch legislator like Tim Scott — not owing simply to what he looks like, but chiefly due to what he believes — will be able to explain to a modern electorate why “those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it,” in a way that Mitt Romney and others before him weren’t able to do?
Let’s hope and pray. For now, congratulations to the Senator-designate!
