Newark’s model doesn’t work on either coast

Living now in New Jersey, I keep up on news from “home” (in Washington State) only to find the stories here and the stories there are the same stories, this time about police telling citizens that, for certain types of crimes, you’re on your own.

When that’s the case – when people see public officials abandon them – they’ll do what’s necessary to protect themselves by buying and carrying guns.

newark mapDanny Westneat of the Seattle Times recounts indignities suffered at the hands of Seattle Police after his car was vandalized and property stolen. Instead of “protect and serve,” the official attitude was “buzz off – we’re too busy.”

Police in Newark, N.J. have the same attitude. Citizens reporting certain crimes are told they have to go to court on their own because the police won’t help them.

To criminals, this official indifference sends a “game on” message giving them free reign resulting in an escalation in the amount and severity of crime.

Without realizing it, the gun-hating Westneat penned a perfect argument in favor the right to keep and bear arms. When you’re a crime victim and the cops won’t come, you must take matters into your own hands. And in those hands there had better be a firearm.
