New Jersey Catholic Students Rally Behind Opportunity Scholarship Act

Nearly half of the Garden State’s nearly 9 million residents are Roman Catholic, Save Jerseyans. Our state consequently has had a strong tradition of faith-based schooling, and these religious institutions – operated by a variety of faiths – have provided a quality education for kids in areas where the public school system simply isn’t getting the job done.

Even urban Democrat leaders like Cory Booker and Steve Adubato recognize what their constituents firmly believe: public education is badly broken and new alternatives should be welcomed by policymakers! But try explaining that to their colleagues in New Jersey’s State Legislature who continue to sell themselves to special interest lobbies hostile to school choice, namely the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA).

On Wednesday, students from St. Anthony’s Catholic school in Camden testified before Lou “Empty Suit” Greenwald’s budget committee in support the Opportunity Scholarship Act. The Assemblycrat-dominated committee was on the road, holding court at Camden County College’s Blackwood campus. They were met outside by a myriad of individuals from different communities and backgrounds, all of whom were rallying in support of the Act even though the Act wasn’t included on the committee’s agenda (surprise!). Some of St. Anthony’s students took some time away from studies and did an excellent job of articulating the importance of achieving real education equality through public-private partnerships. Their education must be paying off!

  1. NJ public schools are some of the best in the nation. I have no idea why any one with any credibility would say Catholic schools are better at educating our children. The notion is plainly false.
