This past Tuesday in Bayonne, a cold and windy December night, 11 dedicated conservatives braved the chill and descended on the Catholic War Veterans outpost in Bayonne, NJ for a meeting of the Jersey City Tea Party Alliance (JCTPA). They came together to discuss the local and national politics, to hear from two speakers, and to watch Atlas Shrugged Part 1.
The first speaker was Albert Enriquez, a field rep for the national office of the College Republicans. Albert’s efforts in the recent NJ statewide Assembly and Senate races were focused on Districts 37, 27, and 17. He spoke of messaging and the need to reach out to minority communities. Albert, himself of Hispanic was not the only conservative of color to speak as the other speaker, Congressional hopeful Washington Flores has familial roots in Ecuador.
Washington’s address to the JCTPA focused on his motivation for running. As a country “we are on a path that is unsustainable”, Washington said. He continued, “everything I do is for my daughters”, and stated that we need lower taxes to “save the America we grew up in for future generations”. Washington, a 12 year resident of Bayonne, originally from Jersey City, is a production manager, family man, father of 4 daughters, and worked two jobs in order to attend night classes at St. PetersCollege where he earned his BSBA in Management Information Systems.
Throughout the speaker and discussion parts of the evening the JCTPA members were well grounded regarding the prospect of generating a political paradigm shift in Jersey City and Hudson County. Rather than pin their hopes to an all or nothing big-win philosophy they were resolute in their commitment to incremental growth during each election cycle. Albert agreed and pointed out that “efforts in NJ make Obama spend more money in New Jersey rather than spending it in traditional battle ground states like Ohio” and that these efforts would help unseat him.
The JCTPA was founded by Douglas Salters in early 2010 in order to bring together disgruntled Democrats, Republicans, and independents to take a stand against government excess.
“As a African-American I was proud as heck of Obama as the first Black President but as his administration has developed he has gone quite left wing” said Salters. The Jersey City Tea Party Alliance was founded by Salters to be a home for “Republicans, dissatisfied Democrats, and Independents” who are unhappy with where President Obama is leading the country.
