Paul Ryan: The Next Great Communicator

“Connectibility” is Paul Ryan’s greatest asset.

He possesses that rare gift, lacking in so many politicians: the ability to rise above the din of mindless political chatter and get attention. Sure he’s smart, a “policy wonk” when it comes to trying to balance the government’s books and fixing Medicare.

But smart isn’t enough. You can be the “brightest” guy in the room but if you can’t effectively communicate your ideas, then what good are they or you?

What sets Ryan apart, I believe, is his winning innate combination of making the complex simple, communicating with empathy/sincerity and engaging his audience. He also effectively counters negative attacks credibly without anger. Emotions are often a losing proposition.

As a former reporter turned communication consultant, I recognize talented, skilled communicators like the Representative. I try to impart much of what Ryan is doing to my clients. I teach that anyone can talk but real leaders, whether corporate or political, communicate effectively, speak from the heart, truly believe what they are saying. Ryan has that gift, that ability. He is comfortable in his own skin and it shows.

Confidence is attractive and what builds confidence is knowledge Ryan really knows his stuff. His self assured, poised delivery is contagious it has obviously rubbed off on his running mate.

Juxtapose Ryan with, Harry Reid, Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosci. When they speak their well rehearsed message points they often step in it. They have the deer in the headlights stare that makes us all so uncomfortable or they say something so totally offensive it reminds us why we so detest politicians.

Interestingly, the campaign of hope and change has gone negative this time around. It will be interesting to contrast the Romney/ Ryan message that in many ways resembles that of Ronald Reagan, who didn’t just point out the flaws but eloquently offered solutions and a real reason to listen.
