It’s been reported that Assemblycrats John McKeon (the same guy who blames taxpayers for high taxes) and Mila Jasey (a horrible liberal in her own right) will conduct an Essex County presser later today condemning voter ID laws.
I guess it’s starting to hit a little close to home for our homegrown liberals, Save Jerseyans, after our neighbor Pennsylvania’s voter ID law was upheld yesterday morning!
Save Jersey has consistently argued for the adoption of a similar law right here in the Garden State. Ironically, the news report cited above failed to mention that two companion pieces of voter ID legislation — sponsored by Republicans — continue to languish in the Democrat legislature. Why isn’t the GOP caucus defending its own proposals?
Assemblymen Rumpf and Gove’s A674 (pdf) and its companion bill, Senator Connor’s S200 (pdf), were introduced on January 10, 2012 but are STILL waiting for committee approval. Jim Whelan chairs the Senate’s State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee (contact info) and consequently holds sway over S200’s fate. Linda Stender is chairwoman of the Assembly’s State Government Committee (contact info) and isn’t doing anything to move A674.
LET’S MOVE ON THIS! Poll after poll demonstrates widespread public support for voter ID laws. Democrats are generally willing to take a risk on this issue because their GOTV efforts hinge on it! But there’s no reason why the GOP shouldn’t hold its own press conference demanding action on the above referenced legislation. It’s a winning issue and yes, hugely important for next year’s gubernatorial and legislative elections.
Educate yourselves, Save Jerseyans… an informed voter is always a Democrat candidate’s worst nightmare. Click here to read through our “voter ID” archives, check out my own proposal (based on the successful PA law) and intellectually arm yourselves for the battle ahead… assuming there will be a battle? Republicans have to want it first.
Let’s help nudge them along: click here to identify your legislators, obtain their contact information and politely (but firmly) DEMAND action TODAY!
