Steve Sweeney: Jealously Running Against Himself

It must be hard being New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, Save Jerseyans. He works tirelessly to make sure that just enough Democrat Senators fall in line to support some of Governor Christie’s best ideas, and then he gets almost none of the credit.

To make matters worse, he then has to find out that Governor Christie is receiving one of the most coveted roles this year at his party’s convention, the keynote speech in prime time. Meanwhile, since there is no position any higher in the South Jersey Democrat Machine for him to aspire to at the moment, Sweeney gets no role in North Carolina.

He puts his neck on the line and supports intelligent Republican policies that are slowly but surely giving New Jersey a comeback, and gets almost nothing in return.

No wonder his office sent out such a bitter statement yesterday to Chris Christie’s big news…

“Governor Christie should use this opportunity to make clear where he stands on the issues that are important to the nation and New Jersey. For example, does he support the Romney/Ryan plan to end Medicare as we know it? Does he support shortchanging our seniors in their retirement years? Does he support the Romney/Ryan ideals of cuts to the middle class and working poor?

“Given Governor Christie’s history of New Jerseyans paying 20% more in property taxes under his watch, or having New Jersey’s unemployment rate remain among the worst in the nation, or his continued policy of tax breaks for millionaires while raising taxes on the working poor, we can only assume that he is in lock step with the Romney/Ryan plan.

“I look forward to seeing whatever spin the Governor tries to use to mask the Romney/Ryan plan to hurt our seniors, and his own failure to create jobs and help the middle class here in New Jersey.”

Looking past the fact that Sweeney completely lies when it comes to the Romeny/Ryan plan (which would not affect any senior citizens today, at all), Senator Sweeney is so angry that it appears he will now be running against himself.

That middle paragraph above outlines the effects of big idea policies that Sweeney fervently backed behind the scenes. Governor Christie really could not have done anything without him, and thus had to dumb down some GOP ideas for the support of Democrat caucuses, and without Sweeney nothing would have passed. But suddenly, since Christie went all national and left him behind, its not good enough for Steve.

Whether the Senator likes it or not, he owns a part of the Christie comeback in New Jersey. And he should be thankful that he does! This insanely negative statement does not tell the whole story, like the fact that property taxes are up but the increases are trending down, along with the downward trend in unemployment. It doesn’t mention that pensions got saved while taxes were raised on not one New Jerseyan, and that the earned income credit is set to be restored for the working poor while income tax cuts are on the way for the middle class.

The fact is that the more Sweeney slams Christie, the more he is really just slamming himself.

  1. What comeback? Unemployment is higher than the national average, just cus you say it, it doesn't make it true. Christie is a discrace to Nj just like Snooki.

  2. I think Mr. Gump did more to affect public affairs than Steve Sweeney. If I'm remembering the movie correctly.
