Who Cares If Romney Isn’t a Great Drinking Buddy?

Obama's infamous "beer summit"

It is nearing October, Save Jerseyans, and President Obama still has a lead (albeit a slight one) in this Presidential campaign. Despite his utterly abysmal record, he is still the “entitlement President.” And a lot of people love that about him.  But man cannot run on entitlements alone.  So what gives??

First, let’s take a moment to review some important points that should dissuade people from casting a “blue” vote (or so you would think).

Obama is a president that SAYS he supports innovation and entrepreneurship, but he does not believe that people truly “build” anything on their own.  He does not seem to have a solid strategic plan about how to inject growth into our economy; instead, the policies of his administration seem to be more reactive than proactive.  He has not implemented programs that reduce our reliance on foreign oil and has stopped work on the Keystone XL pipeline.  This doesn’t really surprise me; I know as well as he does that he needs votes from key groups that consider this endeavor to be environmentally unsafe.  Furthermore, he has been negligent in addressing the unrest in the Middle East.  Obama has shown no loyalty to Israel and while his administration is aware of Iran’s nuclear progress and he is empowered to challenge these initiatives, he has not done anything to deter Iran from moving ahead with augmenting their nuclear program.

Obama is an excellent example of someone who got their first job by charming the right people and not having a shred of experience about how to deliver on the expectations of said job.  And unfortunately for all of us, he really has not learned very much over the past four years.  The same bad business decisions have just perpetuated over his term and we are now in a position where our deficit is DOUBLE what it was in 2008.  That is an indicator of a LOT of financial missteps.  Somebody needs to accept accountability for that.

However, in light of all of the facts that we have, we circle back to the people who are still supporting Obama and fighting to get him another four years.  How is this even possible?

I think it all boils down to a few distinct reasons, but all of them stem from fact that people are still very lukewarm for Mitt Romney…

First, he does not have the same kind of charisma, approachability and likeability that people generally look for in a leader.  He seems unreachable and aloof at times, and people need to feel comfort and reassurance right now, during such an unstable period of time in our country and in the world.  He just does not have the personality to deliver on this.

So even if people don’t particularly like Obama, they already know him as a President.  Everyone generally fears the unknown and since Romney has not let us in on who he is as a person or who he would be as the leader of the free world, people don’t want to “upset the applecart” and start anew.

Second, Romney has no filter.  He speaks his mind when he should not, and it happens at the most inopportune times.  Don’t misunderstand; I think that he is right most of the time.  But I am not “most people.”  I think that the comment he made about a lack of security at the London Olympic games was completely accurate (and he should know since he hosted them in Salt Lake City), but it was just not an appropriate time or place.  Additionally, we know that the British media can be brutal, which only exacerbated the situation.   Romney just does not seem to remember that he is ALWAYS in the public eye, and sometimes things are just better left unsaid. Saying too much makes people nervous.  It is always better to reserve your opinions.  Remember what your mother told you?  If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!

Third, Mr. Romney seems to be a little gun-shy.  I don’t get the impression that he is completely at ease in his own skin.  Conversely, I have a completely different perception of Paul Ryan, who appears to be much more down-to-Earth and has a connection with many different audiences.  The thing is, Romney needs to appear genuine in his desires to help make this country great again.  And even though I believe he feels that way, it does not shine through his words.  And people are not going to want to spend time interpreting what they hear; they want someone to show strength and leadership without hesitation.  That will make people feel more at ease and it will increase their confidence in Romney’s ability to lead.

The bottom line is, I believe in Romney – I believe in his message, in his experience, and in his desire to revamp the federal government so that we can once again flourish as a nation.  He is a successful entrepreneur who understands how to build and maintain a productive business.  He will run the federal government as such.  He is astute enough to understand that the federal government cannot keep up with the number of commitments that the Obama administration has taken on, and he also believes in a transfer of power to the states because he knows from experience that delegating responsibility is a sign of an effective leader.  Efficacious managers realize that they cannot deliver on all tasks or they will become a bottleneck to the success of their companies, to their own peril.  They know to rely on others to get the job done in a timely and effective manner.

So who really cares if he doesn’t have the makings of a fun drinking buddy??  I’ve got plenty of those.  What I DON’T have is confidence in how our country is being run.  And Romney is just the man to get us back on the track towards prosperity.
