Post-Sandy, Christie Suspends Bergen’s Blue Laws

Gas rationing. Electronic voting. Postponing Halloween.

We’re living in a surreal world in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Save Jerseyans.

The latest big news out of the Governor’s office?

At the request of Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan, Governor Chris Christie has temporarily suspended Bergen County’s controversial “blue laws” which restrict retail activity/sales on Sundays throughout the state’s most populous county.

“During this time of recovery and rebuilding, our citizens must have adequate access to the supplies they need to help return their lives to normal – particularly those residents who are still without power,” said Governor Christie by way of press release. “To accomplish this, we are temporarily suspending Blue Laws in Bergen County so that local residents can purchase the essential goods and services they need to continue through recovery period and begin the rebuilding process.”

  1. Governor Christie:

I disagree totally with the suspension of the Blue Sunday Laws in Bergen County after the Sandy recovery period. I do not think opening malls and retail outlets on Sunday will help NJ in the long run. People need a day to spend with family, a need to be in touch with their faith source community, without their jobs being threatened if they elect to sign up for weekday and evening hours. There are many who do not care and they will be available to cover the hours retailers will be open on Sunday.

I do see that suspending the Blue Sunday Law past the recovery period is a method the state of NJ is enforcing to obtain hidden tax dollars from the very victims who suffered severely by living in the state of NJ.

Please,Governor Christie, do not do this to your people.

I am an ex-resident of the beloved Garden State. I am devastated as much as any current resident viewing the loses of RE, businesses, and personal property caused by Sandy. I also grieve over the loss of the Fun Pier and the Jersey Shore.

That is why I am writing.

I am in agreement with you extending the Blue Sunday Laws in Bergen County for the duration of the recovery period only. Please do not tax the victims because they have lost everything.

    Sincerely,

    Darlene Alber
