Flag Ban in West New York?

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

FlagNew Jersey is back in the national news for all of the wrong reasons, Save Jerseyans.

West New York’s Board of Commissioners have drafted a controverisal new ordinance for “General Sign Regulations” that would, if adopted, ban the display of all flags (including Old Glory) in the Hudson County city.

I’m a little surprised by this move, Save Jerseyans.

The ordinance appears curiously overly-broad. Simply sloppy? And would it survive First Amendment scruting? West New York is also the only “top 25″ city in America, ranked by percentage of native Cuban residents, outside of the State of Florida. Approximately 20% of West New Yorkers claim Cuban ancestry. Those folks are proud Cuban Americans. I can’t imagine they’d support an ordinance that banned flying either flag!

According to MyFoxNY, “[t]he proposed ordinance was first read at a meeting on Wednesday.  The final vote on the proposal will be held on Feb. 20 at a 7 p.m. meeting at the municipal building.” We’ll keep you in the loop…

  1. Either someone didn't read the bill carefully, or the committee that reviewed it didn't think it through. Ordinance committees usually "road test" proposed language to make sure it doesn't do something stupid, like banning the American flag. Why, according to this language their own township flags would be outlawed.
