New Poll: Christie Up by 30pts

Incumbent Governor Maintains Commanding Lead; Buono, Sweeney and Booker All Less Popular Than Christie

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

There’s not much good news for Barbara Buono in today’s new Rutgers-Eagleton poll, Save Jerseyans. I can’t imagine why?!

Yes, Governor Christie’s margin shrunk significantly (by 12 points) since the last survey, but when you dig into the underlying numbers, that’s almost completely attributable to Democrats beginning to “come home” as Election Day inches closer; unfortunately for the Democrat ticket, roughly 1/4 of registered Dems still back the Republican in a head-to-head contest. All of this translates to a Christie 30-point trouncing, or 57% to 27%.

Like I said: the details look even worse for Babs than the headlines flying at 30k feet. Only 18% of voters know who she is and, “[r]egardless of which candidate they prefer, 8 in 10 voters believe Christie will win a second term.” That last stat, by the way, includes of Buono’s own supporters! So even if she gets close because of the state’s naturally blue orientation, folks, there’s a real possibility that Christie could still win by double digits owing to Democrat base discouragement.

One final noteworthy nugget… ambitious Senate President Sweeney is equally unknown to state voters. Even Cory Booker’s unknown/no opinion rating is hovering around 36%. Truth be told, I’m a little unsure about Eagleton’s wording of that question since even Christie and Obama are around 10% themselves, and I highly doubt there’s any living soul in New Jersey who hasn’t heard of either man or formed an opinion…

Eagleton 4-12 Poll

You’ll recall that name recognition helped sink Joe Kyrillos last fall but, unlikely the GOP hopeful, New Jersey’s demographics favor a Democrat challenger when unemployment remains high. Expect the numbers to continue to close for that reason alone. Just don’t expect Buono to get too close unless she can somehow distinguish herself by last summer when the Christie money machine starts cranking out paid media.

Never underestimate the power of Chris Christie to undermine conservative principles in order to win the "moderate" voters…
