Here we go again, Save Jerseyans.
Today in Trenton, the Assembly Budget Committee will take up “The Tuition Equality Act” (A4225). What’s that? This legislation would permit ANY New Jersey high school student who’s attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years, received a high school diploma or GED in New Jersey, and who signs an affidavit promising to correct their immigration status to qualify for in-state tuition rates at Garden State public universities.
It’s another example of emotion (and base politics) overtaking logic.
I argued against it 2009 and this Democrat proposal is no less stupid this time around. Let’s not kid ourselves: the goal of federal and state “dream act” proposals is to make immigration law enforcement impossible. Rather than resolve illegal immigration by incorporating recent arrivals into the American experiment, this bill would act as a magnet for more illegal immigration much like the asinine legislation presently poised to pass the U.S. Senate. That outcome helps no one regardless of their status assuming a strong, secure, prosperous America is truly our collective, shared goal. Sometimes I wonder…
