Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean issued the following statement after Wednesday night’s Charleston church shooting that left 9 dead including a South Carolina state senator:

I must echo the calls for justice and peace from the black community: This type of terrorism, too, must be stopped.

“By now, our society should have evolved into one in which all people are equally treated and respected. Yet, tragedies like this prove that we indeed have not. This is not cause to give up, rather, it is a reason for more people to come together to prevent such unthinkable acts of violence and hatred.

“The more leaders, communities, organizations and media outlets who stand up together and speak out against racial and religious ignorance and intolerance, the more people we can save and educate, and the better world we will ensure for us all and generations to come.”
