Unsolicited consumer texting is now illegal in New Jersey

Ever get those strange gibberish advertisement texts at strange hours?

No more. At least not legally.

textA bill, A-617/S-1357, sponsored by Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick to prohibit advertisers from sending unsolicited text advertisements, was signed into law by Governor Chris Chrisitie on Tuesday, Save Jerseyans.

“Unsolicited text messages are a distraction consumers do not want or appreciate,” said Bramnick in a celebratory statement. “They are costly and annoying. This new law protects cell phone owners who have no idea how their personal information was obtained.”

You still need to be careful about accidentally consenting to these texts, of course, whenever you sign up for a consumer mailing list.

The good news? Telecommunications company that sell text messaging services must also now afford customers the option to block all incoming and outgoing text messages. The law further allows for fines of up to $500 for a first violation and $1,000 for each subsequent violation.
