Remembering Marion Crecco, a classy conservative trailblazer

By The Staff | The Save Jersey Blog

Word spread today that we lost a true Garden State gem over the weekend, Save Jerseyans: former Assemblywoman Marion Crecco (R-Bloomfield).

marion greccoA trailblazer for women in the New Jersey business and political communities, her 16-year-long legislative career included stints as deputy speaker, assistant majority leader, assistant majority whip, and chairwoman of the Law and Public Safety Committee. First elected in the Kean landslide of 1985, the Newark native was also a philanthropist spearheading the John I. Crecco Foundation named for her husband, a former Bloomfield mayor, and solid conservative Catholic who led the charge against the gas tax back in ’87 and fought the good fight until redistricting ate her seat in 2001.

Former U.S. Congressman Mike Pappas (R, NJ-12), who described Crecco as a mentor, offered one of the more personal and touching tributes posted on social media:

Marion was an example of what is good about public service. She exemplified real class and a decorum that came naturally. She was committed to her faith in Christ that positively influenced her care for those she served very unselfishly. Her steadfast dedication to the unborn was an inspiration to me and many others. Her love and devotion to her husband and family was another example of what was good and decent about this wonderful woman. Her outward beauty and her radiant smile was a manifestation of her heart and sincerity. I am richer because I knew her and counted her as a friend and mentor. May God bring comfort to her family in the days ahead but may the memories that you have of her sustain you all.”

Crecco was 85.

The entire Save Jersey family extends its deepest sympathies to the Assemblywoman’s family and friends.
