Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-16) will launch a gubernatorial campaign next month, Save Jerseyans, joining Evesham Mayor Randy Brown as challengers to the de facto incumbent, Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno, to succeed Chris Christie as the NJ GOP’s standard bearer.
Guadagno has the backing of powerful Ocean County George Gilmore and his favorite operative, former Christie campaign manager Bill Stepien. Ciattarelli’s political guru is Chris Russell whose campaign portfolio dominates NJ-03 and extends into many other municipalities at both ends of the N.J. Turnpike. Can Mayor Brown, whose local governance resume promises to dominate his own messaging efforts, parlay that experience into a successful outsider insurgency?
It’s early, yes, but it’s not very early. 2017 won’t wait for 2016 to finish. Organizing (and funding) a statewide campaign isn’t a 6-month endeavor.
Which way are you leaning at the get-go?
