NJ-05: McCann launches TV spot revisiting Trump vs. Lonegan feud

HACKENSACK, N.J. — John McCann is making a final two week television push in the 5th Congressional District’s Republican primary, and he’s letting President Donald Trump do most of the talking.

On Monday, the former Cresskill councilman’s campaign launched an ad attacking his intra-party rival, Steve Lonegan, drawing on both Lonegan’s past criticism of Trump as well as Trump’s televised slam of Lonegan:

Back in 2016, Lonegan was an out-spoken Trump critic and Ted Cruz supporter; Lonegamn helped lead an ultimately aborted attempt to deny Trump the GOP presidential nomination at the Cleveland convention.

At one point? Lonegan went on cable television and accused Trump of being “Hillary Clinton with a penis.

“You have a guy named Lonegan,” Trump told Fox News in a July 2016 interview. “I’ve known Lonegan for 25 years in New Jersey. “

“He’s always lost,” Trump continued. “He’s a loser. … Always been a nasty guy. He loses. He’s a loser.”

The NJ-05 GOP contest’s winner will face freshman Democrat Josh Gottheimer in November.

Gottheimer took the seat from Republican Scott Garrett in 2016.
