BRICK, N.J. — It’s a “local,” but Team Hugin thinks it’s a trend. Or maybe a “brick in the wall” is the better metaphor.

On Monday, Democrat Councilman Jim Fozman (D-Brick) endorsed Bob Hugin over Democrat incumbent Bob Menendez in this year’s hotly-contested U.S. Senate race.

“Bob Hugin is our opportunity to secure new, honest representation in Washington for all New Jerseyans,” said Democratic Councilman Jim Fozman. “His credentials as a Marine veteran and business leader are impeccable. Bob is a refreshingly honest and open alternative to disgraced, career politicians like Bob Menendez, who has done little in his 25 years in Washington for New Jerseyans while he enriched himself and embarrassed our state.”

“As an elected official, I feel obligated to support the best candidate for U.S. Senate, regardless of party affiliation.  Bob Hugin is that person who offers the voters the best choice for Senate this November. Bob Menendez is ethically flawed and not the right choice for the voters of this state,” Fozman added.

“The support I am receiving from leaders such as Councilman Jim Fozman is not only humbling, but it also serves as a reminder of how high the stakes are in this election. As Senator, I pledge to put people before party and politics to solve the problems we face in New Jersey,” said Hugin.

Three consecutive public polls have found a single-digit race between Menendez and Hugin, the former hobbled by an indictment and subsequent ethical reprimand and the latter boosted by an ample personal war chest.

Menendez may have trouble uniting his base this fall notwithstanding general Democrat discontent with Donald Trump; approximately 40% of the incumbent’s party voted for his unknown and unfunded opponent in the June primary, and the most recent poll found him garnering only 74% support from Democrat. Hugin, by contrast, is backed by 85% of Republicans.
