Republican Senator Anthony Bucco dies

BOONTON, N.J. – State Senator Anthony “Tony” Bucco has died.

“It is with great sadness I share that Senator Tony Bucco suffered a major heart attack this morning at his home. He passed peacefully this evening with his family by his side at Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville. The family kindly asks for privacy at this time,” reported veteran Republican political operative Mike DuHaime in a statement released on behalf of the Bucco family.

DuHaime had been charged with announcing the Senator’s throat cancer diagnosis in February 2019. Both DuHaime and future White House political director Bill Stepien worked on Bucco’s 1997 State Senate campaign.

Bucco (R-25) began his career in Trenton in 1995, succeeding Rodney P. Frelinghuysen in the State Assembly following Frelinghuysen’s elevation to Congress. He also served as a Morris County Freeholder, Boonton’s mayor and as a member of Boonton’s Board of Aldermen during his extensive public career.

His son Anthony Bucco is an incumbent Assemblyman in the same legislative district seeking reelection this November.

“Senator Bucco leaves behind an enduring legacy of public service and selfless leadership. His sudden passing comes on the heals of his courageous fight with cancer,” NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt said after news of the Senator’s passing broke “The State of New Jersey is no doubt a better place for his tireless work in the state legislature. The thoughts and prayers of the entire NJGOP family is with Bucco family.”
