Congressman Chris Smith (R, NJ-04) brought in $264,010 during the first quarter of 2022, a somewhat tepid fundraising performance for a long-time incumbent.
It might not matter all the same.
The Congressman’s warchest now stands at $825,347, and most importantly, he’s yet to draw a serious Democrat opponent in a Jersey Shore-dominated distict that grew more red in redistricting. Jack Ciattarelli carried the new NJ-04 by 31-points last November.
Unless one of his primary opponents posts a significant sum in the bank (or generates something game-changing like a Trump endorsement), Smith’s financial position is probably more than strong enough to support his bid for a 22nd term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The flip side: IF Trump jumps in (he issued a call for Smith primary challengers last year), the Congressman could be vulnerable in his current financial position.
