A Trump vs. DeSantis 2024 primary battle may be right around the corner, Save Jerseyans, and conservative operatives and activists are starting to take sides.
Some believe it’s time for a new candidate for the next presidential. For example, veteran GOP operative Rick Shaftan (best known for his years serving as ex-NJGOP perennial candidate Steve Lonegan’s consultant and strategist-in-chief) dropped a seven-tweet thread on Saturday urging Republicans to leave Trump behind. Shaftan specifically cited Trump’s endorsement of candidates Shaftan and many base conservatives consider undeserving of support.
“By endorsing Katie Britt in the #ALRunoff (and turning his back on @MoBrooks) after endorsing Mitt Romney, John McCain, Paul Ryan, Denver Riggleman, Mehmet Oz and Vernon Jones (and the Marxist Bernie Bro Joe Kent), none of us owe Trump any loyalty at all anymore,” Shaftan tweeted.
“He was a great president, and a lousy ex-president. He needs to go away,” Shaftan continued. “America is moving on. DeSantis is our leader now. And everyone on the GOP side knows this.”
Recent polling has found DeSantis and Trump beating Joe Biden by double-digit margins.
