Sheriff Jonathan Sammons (R-Mullica Hill) sees the hallmarks of desperation as his party appears poised to take control of Gloucester County government for the first time in a generation. Needless to say the embattled South Jersey Dems aren’t taking it well. The surest sign of sinking Democrat fortunes in Gloucester County, one the stronghold of Steve Sweeney: a growing volume of racially-themed attacks aimed at their surging Republican challengers.
Sammons decided to take the Democrats’ latest race-baiting mailers head on on behalf of his allies who are on the ballot this November 8th.
“I hate racists, but hypocrites who claim others are racists are by far the worst,” said Sammons, a black Republican in a video released by the Gloucester County GOP.
Unsurprisingly, Sammons has been a victim of Democrat racism following his 2021 upset win over multi-term incumbent Carmel Morina, a point which Sammons referenced in his taped remarks.
After it became clear that Sammons was the winner, the Democrat-controlled county commissioner’s board promptly voted to remove the sheriff and his staff from the county administrative office on South Broad Street in Woodbury and relegating them to the long-closed former county jail building on Hunter Street.
“Not only that, but the Democrats have decided to not pay one of my staff members for over a month just because I will not let them control my office,” added Sammons who also noted that the Democrats were cutting his budget by 37%.
