N.J. moves ahead with mandating abortion coverage, training non-doctors to perform them

The abortion industry is expanding and profiting in the Garden State with active assistance from the Murphy Administration.

To begin with, New Jersey is about to become the 8th state to require abortion coverage in health insurance plans.

A New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance report dated shortly before Thanksgiving sets forth the department’s proposal for a new regulation. Phil Murphy signed a law back in January 2022 directing the department to consider a regulation.

“This study demonstrates the need for a regulation to provide that health benefit plans delivered, issued, executed, or renewed in this State, provide comprehensive coverage for abortion,” the report concludes. “Specifically, with respect to health benefits plans regulated by the Department, there is a need for a regulation to ensure coverage for abortion services without exceptions that limit such coverage to cases of rape, incest or the life of the mother. This report identifies the reasons such a regulation is necessary including the need for greater transparency, consistency with the Medicaid market, the de minimis cost of such coverage, and the role coverage plays in creating better social and medical outcomes.”

Meanwhile, Republican legislative leaders criticized a Friday announcement by Attorney General Matthew Platkin of a $5 million grant to help train non-doctors to perform abortions. In 2021, the State Board of Medical Examiners voted to adopt rules to remove the requirement that a physician must perform an abortion.

New rules published in the New Jersey Register in December 2021 cleared the path for Advanced Practice Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Certified Midwives to perform early aspiration terminations of pregnancy.  The funding announced today will, among other things, help ensure that those practicing or studying to become licensed in these professions receive the training necessary to perform abortion services.

“Governor Murphy wants to use taxpayer dollars to push extreme policies that fund abortion without limits right up until the moment of birth,” said Senate GOP Leader Steven Oroho (R-24). “Now he’s spending millions to set up non-doctors to be abortion providers. There are better ways to help women than to put their health in jeopardy by paying for them to get medically invasive abortions by people without full medical training.”

“There are better ways to spend this $5 million to address true public health emergencies, like maternal mortality rates because of OBGYN shortages or teen mental health crises caused by the government-led pandemic lockdowns,” added Assembly GOP Leader John DiMaio (R-23). “Instead, this administration is throwing taxpayer money at a publicity stunt for a nonissue.”
