N.J. on the brink of electing its first trans official, and it’s a Republican

The dust has yet to settle in a handful Trenton city runoff race, Save Jerseyans, but a transgender candidate is clinging to a razor-thin 11-vote lead in the North Ward.

Jennifer Williams is a registered Republican. In fact, Williams is the deep blue capital city’s GOP municipal leader. She would be the Garden State’s first elected transgender public official.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Williams was clinging to an 11-vote lead over rival Algernon Ward (401 to 390) in an open contest triggered by Councilwoman Marge Caldwell-Wilson declining to seek re-election in November.

Williams – who ran on a platform prioritizing public safety, clean drinking water and improved housing – still needs to survive the provisional ballot count to hold on (there were 20 left to count meaning Williams stands a good chance of ending ahead), and the narrow margin could trigger a recount that wouldn’t be resolved until sometime in the new year.
