N.J. bill requiring automatic vaccine registration emerges from committee

Step #1 towards a full-fledged vaccine passport system?

That remains to be seen (Governor Murphy refused to rule them out in 2021), but S3240 emerged from the N.J. Senate Health committee on Thursday with language that’s more than a little spooky and likely to give rise to widespread concerns, Save Jerseyans.

By way of background, “[t]he [New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS)] is a Statewide database that maintains records of individual vaccination histories,” the legislative proposal’s statement explains. “Individuals born after January 1, 1998 are automatically included in the registry, unless the individual’s parent or guardian provides a written request that the person not be included in the registry; individuals born prior to January 1, 1998 may be included in the registry by written request.”

This bill requires any person who is not currently enrolled in the registry to be automatically enrolled at the time the person is administered a vaccine, unless the person or the person’s parent or legal guardian, in the case of a person younger than 18 years of age, provides a written request not to participate in the registry,” the statement continues.

What could go wrong?

“Opting out” is a favorite Trenton tactic as of late; the recently-enacted radical sex education curriculum requires a parental opt out as opposed to an opt-in.

S3240 passed 5-2 with one member not voting.

A companion bill has been referred to the applicable committee in the Assembly.
