LD3: Ed The Trucker wins nomination battle with ex-running mate

The clash of ex-LD3 running mates quickly turned into a rout on Tuesday night.

State Sen. Edward Durr (better known as “Ed the Trucker”) rode his brand to a GOP primary win in the Deep South Jersey district, and his current running mates Assemblywoman Bethanne McCarthy Patrick and Hopewell Mayor Tom Tedesco appeared to be a long for the ride.

Durr led Assemblywoman Beth Sawyer by nearly 20-points with over 50% of anticipated voted tabulated as of about 45 minutes after polls closed in Salem, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties. Sawyer (who never got along with Durr from the early days of their respective terms) attempted to cast Durr as an unengaged partner in Trenton, but the Trucker’s name recognition from his headline-making 2021 win over Steve Sweeney proved far too much to overcome with the district’s conservative base.

Durr will now face Sweeney’s former legislative teammate (ex-Assemblyman John Burzichelli) in November.
