New Jersey’s June primary helped add thousands of newly-minted voters to the statewide rolls, and the N.J. GOP came out on top as it has almost every month since Donald Trump left office.
Last month, Republicans added 14,744 new registrants while Democrats specifically picked up a net gain of 11,043 new Democrats in June. The larger GOP gain had the effect of decreasing the Democrats’ voter registration advantage across all 21 counties over the final few weeks of June.
While there are still 992,503 more registered Democrats in New Jersey than Republicans, a consistent GOP trend of net gains over the party in power has eliminated the Democrats’ symbolic one million voter registration edge reached back in July 2020.
The symbolic advantage ended officially in April of this year.
Republicans’ June gains also came in helpful places: for example, the opposition picked up 718 new Republican registrants in LD3 where Ed Durr’s slate is holding off a challenge from Steve Sweeney’s ex running mate and his machine allies. Republicans also picked up 525 voters in LD4 where the retirement of Democrat Fred Madden is presenting Republicans with their best opportunity of the cycle to flip a State Senate seat.
