I actually thought Chris Christie was having a better debate #2 than the first time around, Save Jerseyans. I try to be objective about these things!
But these crowded stage battles often come down to sound bites, and when the ex-governor tried to attack Trump (the centerpiece of his issue-limited campaign) with a joke that failed to land, the Internet was characteristically. merciless.
“Donald: I know you’re watching, you can’t help yourself,” Christie said. “You’re not here tonight, not because of polls and not because of your indictments. You’re not here tonight because you’re afraid of being on the stage and defending your record. You’re ducking these things, and let me tell you what’s going to happen. You keep doing that and no one up here is going to call you Donald Trump anymore. We’re going to call you Donald Duck.”

Debate viewers promptly headed to social media to mock Christie’s clearly rehearsed attempt for laugh…

Christie has based his whole campaign on attacking and confronting Trump, and it comes down to this groaner? Not serious… https://t.co/pOzVoxE6Ir

How many times did Chris Christie practice his Donald Duck speech in the mirror this morning? pic.twitter.com/q1dywWKJvD

Good wind-up…but terrible punch line: "Donald Duck?"
hard to believe Christie is from Jersey— Charles V Payne (@cvpayne) September 28, 2023
Imagine running for President, looking down at a list of pre-written insults and going “Donald Duck I’m definitely using that one!” pic.twitter.com/rY4OV7e6Jd
