The NJGOP State Committee shot down a hugely unpopular plan to eliminate New Jersey’s 2024 presidential primary in resounding fashion, 34-0 on Tuesday night.
Some high ranking Republicans stress that the problem remains: an RNC edict that the state’s delegate selection date is a tad too late. They say the onus is on the RNC to address the problem, not the state party or its voters.
“Tonight the NJ Republican County Chairs and the Republican State Committee voted unanimously to tell the Republican National Committee that we expect to be able to have a full-on Presidential Primary on June 4, 2024, and to not be punished for not acceding to the RNC rules. We will not allow RNC rules to disenfranchise our Republican voters,” Michael Donohue, a former superior court judge and chairman of the Cape May County GOP, shared on social media Tuesday evening.
“The RNC needs to figure out how to respect our voters and bring us all together for victory in ‘24. More info soon,” added Donohue. “We did the right thing to protect the voting franchise and the integrity of our Primary Election.”
Sources say that Congressman Jeff Van Drew has appealed directly to the RNC to grant a waiver for the state, and it’s expected that other New Jersey Republican leaders are planning to add their voices to the effort.
