The hero of Election 2021 went down in flames on Tuesday night, Save Jerseyans.
State Senator Ed “The Trucker” Durr was defeated by former Assemblyman John Burzichelli by nearly 4,000 votes. Republican Assemblywoman Bethanne McCarthy Patrick and GOP Hopewell Township Committeeman Tom Tedesco also appeared to lose albeit by much more narrow margins.
Durr became an overnight hero in 2021 after defeating then-Senate President Steve Sweeney in a historic and largely under-the-radar upset. Democrats invested heavily in reclaiming their lost seat in 2023, roasting Durr over old tweets predating his time in office that went unaddressed two years ago.
Durr’s defeat left Republicans in a net wash position in the upper chamber owing to the reclamation of Sam Thompson’s seat in LD12.
Assembly Republicans were in worse shape, down five total Assembly seats across all 40 districts in year that Republicans had hoped to significantly reduce their deficit with Democrats.
