Kean: Taylor Swift deepfake porn craze underscores need for AI regulation

It’s a strange new world, Save Jerseyans, and the debate over how the government could effectively and constitutionally rein in artificial intelligence may about to become a top Swiftie priority.

Congressman Tom Kean, Jr. (R, NJ-07) may also be the last guy you’d expect to wade into a porn debate, but on Thursday, the straight-laced legislator cited viral pornographic “deepfake” images of entertainment superstar Taylor Swift presently enveloping social media as a clear illustration of the need for formal regulation of AI.

“It is clear that AI technology is advancing faster than the necessary guardrails,” said Kean. “Whether the victim is Taylor Swift or any young person across our country – we need to establish safeguards to combat this alarming trend. My bill, the AI Labeling Act, would be a very significant step forward.”

One alleged culprit was “Celeb Jihad,” a website notorious for posting both leaked and fake images of nude female celebrities. Swift previously threatened the site with legal action.

Kean is sponsor of HR 6466, the “AI Labeling Act,” which would attempt to add disclosures to any AI-made content including images and online chatbots. He’s also a cosponsor of H.R. 3106, the “Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act.”

“As a father, I am deeply disturbed by how effortlessly this kind of technology can be used in an explicit nature and minors can very easily be the victims,” Kean explained following a November 2023 spate of AI-generated nude student photo at Westfield High School. “My heart goes out to the parents of these students and the victims at Westfield High School who have been affected by this incident. My team and I have spoken with families involved in this incident to find a solution to prevent something like this from ever happening again.”

“Artificial intelligence is progressing astoundingly fast, and so are the companies behind its development,” added the House freshman “We are living in a highly advanced technological world that is ever-changing and proper oversight is necessary.”
