N.J. Young Republican Chairman, charged with criminal sexual contact, called upon to resign

West Milford Councilman and New Jersey Young Republican Federation Chairman Matt Colon was charged with 4th degree criminal sexual contact and harassment last month, Save Jerseyans. Another YR leader wants him to step down from his statewide post as a result.

“The investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and West Milford Police Department revealed serious allegations against Chairman Conlon that cannot be overlooked or excused,” said Michael Manning, chairman of the Monmouth County Young Republicans. “Such behavior is entirely incompatible with the principles and values that every New Jersey Young Republican should stand for.”

According to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office in its February 15th release, Conlon allegedly “touched the intimate part of an adult victim in an unwelcome and inappropriate manner within a residence in the Township of West Milford.”

4th degree criminal sexual contact carries up to 18 months in prison, and the harassment charges could result in an additional 30 days in county jail.

“We demand Chairman Conlon step down from his role and allow for the election of new leadership to ensure the continued integrity of the New Jersey Young Republican Federation,” added Manning. “The Monmouth County Young Republicans stand with the victims of sexual assault and harassment, and we remain committed to fostering an environment of accountability and respect within our political community.”
