Atlantic County GOP claims 2.7k ballots prematurely opened, demands criminal probe

What’s going on in Atlantic County?

On Tuesday evening, Atlantic County Republican Chairman Don Purdy called for a formal criminal inquiry after 2,700 primary election ballots were allegedly prematurely opened by board of elections workers. N.J.S.A. 19:63-22 provides that no ballots should be opened until five days prior to the election. This year, that’s May 30th.

But hundred of ballots have already been opened, say the GOP, according to a source on the board.

“Why is the Democrat-appointed Board of Elections Clerk instructing employees to illegally open ballots before the statutory date?” questioned Purdy, who wondered aloud whether Democrats were consciously attempting to manipulate election outcomes.

Purdy reports having contacted both the Attorney General’s Office and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in order to secure an investigation.

“Voters deserve transparency and accountability,” Purdy added. “I trust that the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office will conduct a thorough investigation and provide the necessary answers to restore faith in the voting system.”
