A brand new Stockton University poll find New Jerseyans more worried about illegal immigration than they were during the midterms.
The poll of registered voters revealed that 57% back deporting illegal immigrants including 33% of Democrats. An overwhelming marjority of Republicans (89%) and independents (56%) agree.
Two years ago, only 34% believed immigration to the United States should be less easy compared with 51% today. It’s a somewhat dramatic finding for a state that became a “sanctuary” jurisdiction under the incumbent Democrat governor and voted for Joe Biden in 2020 by double digits.
“Findings like this in a blue state like New Jersey help explain why the Democratic party has shifted to take a harder line on this issue,” said Alyssa Maurice, who serves as the director of research at Stockon’s polling institute. “On its face, the results can seem conflicting, but voters seem to be rejecting the notion of unchecked migration, which has been a big focus of this election cycle, while still embracing legal pathways to citizenship.”
