Donald Trump narrowly lost New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District by almost four points in 2020, 51.0% to 47.4%, Save Jerseyans, but he’s up one-point among registered voters at the moment. That’s according to a newly-released survey from the Monmouth Polling Institute.
According to Monmouth, “[a]mong all registered voters this year, and taking into account potential third-party voting, 47% support Donald Trump and 46% back Kamala Harris. Among extremely motivated voters, though, Harris (49%) has a slight edge over Trump (47%). Another 2% of motivated voters support a third-party candidate while just 1% are undecided on their presidential choice.”
Meanwhile, incumbent Republican Tom Kean Jr. is allegedly leading his opponent Sue Altman by two points in the Central Jersey district populated by a whiter and higher-than-average educated voter base.
“There are practically no undecided presidential voters at this point. It’s all about motivation,” explained Patrick Murray, the institute’s head pollster. “However, a good chunk of these voters have yet to make up their minds about who to back in the House election. They are going to turn out, which means any late breaking down-ballot decisions could determine who wins this seat.”
New Jersey hasn’t voted for the GOP presidential nominee since 1988, but Monmouth’s results could provide an additional piece of evidence pointing to a closer contest in 2024 after Democrats posted double-digit victories here in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020. There haven’t been any publicly-released statewide polling results in New Jersey post-Joe Biden’s departure from the race…
