N.J. will see up to 20% electric bill cost increases beginning spring 2025

As it turns out, Save Jerseyans?

The Murphy Administration’s plans to build an energy policy around windmills, solar panels, unicorn farts and evasion isn’t panning out for New Jersey residents. On Wednesday, the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) announced that the annual electricity auction for Basic Generation Service (BGS) landed with higher costs for ratepayers beginning June 1st.

Highers costs for electricity will arrive just as the warmer weather months begin and New Jerseyans begin to rely on their electicity-powered central air conditioning units.

“The average monthly bill for a residential ratepayer using BGS service is expected to increase for most customers,” the BPU announced. “Specifically, ratepayers supplied by PSE&G will see an average estimated bill increase of 17.24%, ratepayers supplied by JCP&L will see an average estimated bill increase of 20.20%, ratepayers supplied by ACE will see an average estimated bill increase of 17.23%, and ratepayers supplied by RECO will see an average estimated bill increase of 18.18%.”

Atlantic City Electric customers may see the largest average increases, as high as $28.02 extra monthly.

It’s not hard to see what happened. The Murphy Administration went all-in on wind energy but a combination of grassroots resistance, smart legal maneuvers and economic forces doomed two offshore projects. Meanwhile, Democrats haven’t invested in improving our aging energy infrastructure and expanding more traditional energy sources including nuclear and natural gas; at the moment, 3 in 4 Garden State households rely upon natural gas.

The result: no plan – we’re still waiting for the release of the so-called energy “master plan” and its been years – and there’s no hope of increasing capacity amid a looming energy price crunch.

If only someone had seen it coming…
