LD25: Bucco elevated to State Senate following father’s passing

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – There’s a new twist in this year’s hotly-contested LD25 legislative contest.

On Tuesday night, the district’s GOP committee gathered and elevated Assemblyman Anthony Bucco (R-25) to fill the seat vacated by his father – Tony Bucco – when the late senator passed away unexpectedly following a heart attack in September.

Bucco’s imminent swearing in ceremony will result in an LD25 Assembly vacancy that will need to be filled; in the interim, Bucco will remain a candidate for Assembly in the November 5th general election along with his running mate, Brian Bergen.

Democrats have attacked Bucco over the strange procedural situation but without much success in part because they recently allowed Cory Booker to do the same thing, running for U.S. Senate and (possibly) president or vice president simultaneously.
