NJ-03: Smith cites “deep distrust” as reason for refusing Alcotest

NJ-03 Republican candidate Ian Smith issued a statement to his supporters on Wednesday following news breaking of his DUI arrest in Burlington County.

“By now, most of you have read about what happened during the early hours of Sunday morning,” wrote Smith on social media. “Due to the ongoing nature of the case, my statements will be limited to what has already been said. I was pulled over, passed a sobriety test (in poor testing conditions), and was arrested by the officer.”

“My choice to not submit to a breathalyzer reflects my distrust after 2 years of persecution,” the candidate continued. “I deeply appreciate everyone who has reached out and the support offered by friends, family, and supporters around NJ and the country.”

Smith became a minor conservative national celebrity during the Covid-19 pandemic after he resisted efforts by local authorities and the Murphy Administration to shutter his Bellmawr-based Atilis Gym.

Refusing to submit to an Alcotest is illegal in New Jersey.
