Menendez protests innocence, plays race card

It’s never Bob Menendez’s fault, Save Jerseyans!

He alleged a conspiracy at the time of his last indictment, and he’s doing again with today’s bribery indictment. It’s his favorite fallback excuse for all manner of corruption.

New Jersey’s senior senator, accused of accepting lavish gifts including gold bars in exchange for favors including helping Egypt, also shamelessly played the race card in his formal post-indictment statement.

“Those behind this campaign simply cannot accept that a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings could rise to be a U.S. Senator and serve with honor and distinction,” Menendez claimed. “Even worse, they see me as an obstacle in the way of their broader political goals.”

Menendez didn’t identify the conspirators. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (Damian Williams) is non-white and the son of immigrants making him arguably an unlikely candidate to perpetrate a racist conspiracy against an Hispanic federal legislator.

Menendez also claimed that prosecutors “wrote the charges they wanted” and suggested his actions are part of the “normal work of a congressional office.”

Do all congressmen accept luxury cars and gold bars in the course of their “normal work”?

Good to know!
