Are Mitt and Herman the Last Credible Candidates?

I’m not accepting the Old Media/Obama Administration alliance’s premise, Save Jerseyans, that Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels was the only “serious” prospective candidate in the Republican primary field. Most of 2012’s GOP hopefuls are persons of substance. We cannot allow the media to choose our candidates for us based solely on how often they criticize Rush Limbaugh or use the phrase “civility” in public addresses.

Substance, however, doesn’t necessarily translate to credibility in a presidential contest. Business prodigy Mitt Romney and former Godfather Pizza CEO Herman Cain might be the last two candidates standing who still measure up to that higher standard.

Setting aside their accomplishments, almost every other remaining candidate – Gingrich, Santorum, Bachmann, Paul, Huntsman, T-Paw and yes, Ms. Palin – are truly career politicians. Some of them may have done other things; for example, Ron Paul has a medical background and both Pawlenty and Huntsman spent at least a little time in the private sector. But the fact remains that each of these individuals owe their respective notoriety and livelihood entirely to political activism or bureaucratic service.

You don’t have to be a career politician to recognize that, barring a cataclysmic terrorist or fopo event, the overarching issue of the 2012 campaign season will be job creation. Government overspending, a terrible tax code, poor public schools, disastrous health care policies and a weak approach to China have cumulatively endangered the United States’ economic supremacy. We’re in serious trouble. The courageous Paul Ryan changed has the game, such that only the most credible conservative alternatives to failed liberal policies will suffice.

Enter Mitt and Herman. While both are highly educated men, Governor Romney and Mr. Cain come from completely opposite geographic, religious, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. What they share is a history of creating jobs and resurrecting companies long before expressing serious interest in the political arena. No other candidates can stake similar claims. After all, what is America other than a huge, failing corporation in need of a new direction? Consequently, Mitt and Herman’s pre-political experiences can provide the strongest contrast to four years of Obama/Biden/Reid/Pelosi hyper-partisan policies that have pushed our country to the brink of fiscal collapse.

With all of that being said, I fully recognize that candidate Barack Obama boasted zero business experience. But times have changed, don’t you think? This blogger isn’t ready to make any endorsements until the field finishes developing and the candidates complete their opening arguments, but based on the field as is, this is certainly something to think about. All I’m saying is the following: a Republican Party serious about job creation may not have more credible options than two  job creators par excellence, Mitt Romney and Herman Cain.
