Someone Call the Wahmbulance for Steve Sweeney

Steve Sweeney made headlines on Drudge and Politico this weekend when he called Governor Christie “mean” and a “bastard” for making his budget cuts. He characterized the line item vetoes as “cruel” and that he wanted to “punch him in the head.” He also claims that Christie is acting more like a King than a Governor (despite the fact that no action taken has been remotely outside constitutional bounds).

President Sweeney, if you do not like the cuts that the Governor made, then rally your caucus together and override the veto. It really is that simple. Whining is not going to change anything. You knew this was coming, you knew that when you passed a budget based on false revenue projections that there were going to have to be cuts. The idea that your cooperation on pension and benefit reform somehow entitled you to bend the rules of economic reality is laughable. That reform needed to happen, and that should have been the only reason you did it.

This is exactly why I suggested that the Governor not use the line item, but instead send the entire budget back to the Legislature. That budget was a mess, completely based on bloated information, it did not deserve the consideration the Governor’s office even gave it. The message of a strong veto would have been heard loud and clear, rather than give legitimacy to what the Democrats tried to do.

Now we have to listen to Senator Sweeney complain about how mean the Governor is for doing his job and passing a balanced budget, and as the election approaches this fall, we will have to see commercials about all of the cuts that Governor Christie made himself, cuts that no Democrat in the Legislature has to defend or run from. After about 48 hours of whining, I can honestly say I have already grown tired of it. And theres no sign of it ending soon. Here’s to a loooong election year.

  1. Its about time that the big wigs in the trenton office get what they should have gotten a long time ago. How dear Sweeney whine……. I am a state worker and I have to deal with it but I am not saying anything that alot of people already said. Mr. Sweeney, you and the rest of the so call co workers can now feel what we are feeling. You want to live high class and noses up in the air now you can live with us at the other end and make ends meet like the rest of the people in NJ. Get off your high horse and deal with it. You are no different than the rest of us. I challenge you to do what my husband and I along with the rest of the people of NJ have to do and that is to live paycheck to paycheck.
