On Affordable Empire and the Levant (Syria)

For better or worse our nation is an empire. That we must scale down our imperial overreach is an obvious an accepted fact. We need not maintain garrisons in dozens of nations around the world, nor should we continue to lord our suzerainty around like a bludgeon. Rather, in these tough economic times we must evaluate where it is the most cost effective to invest our resources so that we have the greatest impact. There is no better opportunity today to advance American interests at such a low cost than in Syria.

Regardless of where one stands on our former Iraqi engagement, it is an acknowledged fact that the government of Bashar Al Assad was facilitating the flow of foreign terrorists into Iraq and that arms and munitions were traveling from his friend and ally Iran. When our nation stood with the Lebanese pro-freedom movement of the Cedar Revolution, it was Hezbullah, the Lebanese arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and friend of Assad, which stood athwart us and our allies. It has been Iranian armed and trained insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan who continue to harm US forces and stymie our goals. No matter how convinced one may be that our former occupation of Iraqand our ongoing military misadventure in Afghanistan are not in out interests, it is at least equally against our interests to let despots around the world to think it okay to harm the United State of America and our servicemen. It is in our interest to repay the Iranian Regime, the Assad family, and Hezbullah ten fold and restore the fear factor nations once had when contemplating interfering with the US.

This triumvirate of bad actors, currently bleeding the Syrian people, has bled our serviceman and women across the Middle East. Yet today in Syria, we have a unique opportunity to return the favor and restore fear of the UnitedState in bad actors around the world. Yet we should not occupy, whether by land or through air, Syria. We should arm the opposition, do so secretly and with the help of our allies Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Many have wrongly complained of our lopsided relationship Israel and have posited that we went to war in Iraq not for our interests but for its. While this is easily proven false by the fact that Israel today is less safe than when Saddam was in power, and that Israels national security elites preferred to have Saddam bothering the Iranian Regime than an Shia dominated Iraq allied with Iran, in our involvement in Syria we can and obviously should use Israel’s many assets.

To be clear, the United States, Israel, and the Hashemites can not be directly or openly involved in the Syrian opposition movement. That said Israel and the Hashemites have a population of Arabic speakers Jew, Arab, and Druze who have fought for their nations, are trained well in war, and can blend in with the Syrian population. Israel’s Druze community has been committed to its defense almost since Israel’s inception, the thousands of Beduin (an Arab ethnic group with a traditionally nomadic lifestyle) who have volunteered for service in the Israeli Defense Forces, and the thousands of Jews who know Arabic or Kurdish and whose roots are in Middle Eastern countries from which their parents or grand parents were expelled, as well as Jordanian troops, can be used to infiltrate, arm, and train the opposition. Iranian regular Revolutionary Guard troops as well as their Lebanese branch, Hezbullah, are already engaged in training Syrian forces and most likely will be involved in the heavy fighting to come. This is a fact all recognize but politely ignore to avoid the international consequences. The same can and should be done by the US through our proxies Israel and the Hashemites.

Syria, as much of the Middle East, is a land in turmoil. It is a nation with a long shared history but no experience in democratic rule and is ruled by a minority ethno-religious sect (the Alawi). Its rulers have styled themselves a Republican Dynasty as if heredity and a Republic were compatible norms. Its government has imprisoned, abused, and murdered its people. All across the Arab world the much vaunted Arab Spring has empowered and enfranchised radically anti-Western and anti-American movements.Syria presents an opportunity not only to do a moral good and stand against tyranny but also to stymie the designs of the anti-Liberty Islamic fundamentalist movement. It offers us a low cost way to return with interest the actions done to us by the Iranian Regime and the government of Bashar Al Assad and it can be done with little direct and completely deniable US involvement.

  1. Why can't we be directly involved in the Syrian civil war? There's a greater moral rationale to be there than Libya. American foreign policy under Obama is rudderless.
