Americans for Prosperity is hitting the airwaves again. This time their target is the NJ Residential Foreclosure Transformation Act, a bill being pushed by Democrats that creates a new lawyer of government with frightening power.
The new agency will have the power and funding to swoop into your town, collect foreclosed properties, and then turn them into “low income” housing for certain classes of individuals requiring assistance. Under the bill, this low income designation by the state would encumber the property for 30 years.
The ad, as most political ads do, describes worst case scenario for the bill. For example, Trenton could take over your neighbor’s old house and basically open up a halfway house there for up to 30 years. While it sounds over the top, it is actually possible under the current wording of the legislation. And AFP is right, this would destroy property values anywhere around one of these target homes, even more so than the foreclosure process already does.
It is also possible that the bill violates principles of home rule. Zoning is a local function, not something determined by the state. The Mt. Laurel lines of cases requires municipalities to have a certain amount of low income residential zones within their borders. However, the state should not be able to come in and add more housing if a town is up to par on its mandate, and towns should still be able to decide where those areas are so not to disturb the character of their town as their taxpayers enjoy it.

Today I signed AFP's petition to implore my NJ State Senator and Assemblymen to vote NO on this HORRENDOUS TRAVESTY and proposed SOCIALIST legislation known as A2168/S1566. I have since found out that one of my Assemblymen is a sponsor of this piece of trash, so I can only hope that there are other active and concerned NJ homeowners out there that can help defeat this attack on tax-paying NJ homeowners. Low income housing residents will do NOTHING but occupy vacant space. They have NO extra money to help improve their own living conditions and that means decent neighborhoods will certainly suffer and decline when those residents who have money move away. Seems to me that this is of no concern to the bill sponsors. After all, State Senators and Assemblymen don't live in average middle class neighborhoods, do they? To them, their support of this SOCIALIST AGENDA legislation is a win-win for their political career and for their friends in the municipalities, counties, and Trenton. I hope Governor Christie does the right thing and VETOES this attack on NJ Middle Class homeowners!!!
