Obama Channels Sweeney to Deflect from Economy

Obama made big money yesterday by “evolving,” conveniently just hours after swing-state North Carolina voted to ban gay marriage.

I don’t think ANYONE doubts the purely political motives behind this move, Save Jerseyans. There are only three camps in America this morning: (1) voters who know and hate it, (2) voters who know and love it, and (3) Democrats politicians who desperately need to embrace a distraction.

You can count State President Steve Sweeney (D-NJ) in category #3; yesterday, he issued an objectively over-the-top statement yesterday slamming North Carolina:

In light of the absolutely shameful action we saw in North Carolina yesterday, it is good to know that public support for marriage equality continues to rise. Setbacks, no matter how big or small, will not deter what we all know is destined to become a reality. It is time the opponents of fairness and equality, Governor Christie among them, realize they are on the wrong side of history.”

Well, he’s certainly called Christie worse!

Of course, Senator Sweeney is “absolutely shameful” by his very own standard. He infamously flip-flopped on gay marriage in New Jersey, admitting that his initial no-vote “was purely based on political calculation.” Now he’s in good company with his equally morally untethered president!

But Obama and Sweeney’s “pure political calculations” aren’t pure political cowardice, Save Jerseyans. It’s partly about fundraising as discussed above. It’s also a transparent liberal strategy to do something for which they’ve previously lambasted Republicans: raising “social issues” to unite the Democrat base and distract from the economic realities working against incumbents in 2012.

Think on it for a moment: as of late, we’ve seen much more passion out of Obama on the state-centric Trayvon Martin case (a.k.a none of his business), the year-old OBL story (a singular and now over-played instance of positive decisionmaking), and this instant gay marriage controversy than the plight of millions of indefinitely under- and straight-up unemployment Americans. And why is that? Because the President knows his economic policies have failed miserably! So he’d rather discuss something else. Something which, conveniently, his underperforming contributor core feel strongly about.

So the next time your obnoxious liberal friend complains about the alleged Republican/conservative “obsession with social issues,” Save Jerseyans, remind them that it’s DEMOCRAT pols like Obama and Sweeney who keep bringing it up to score political points and cover their own tracks!

  1. Wow Matt, the level of hypocrisy has just reached an all time high when you are the one calling other people obnoxious.

Considering that you insist that this is a Republican/Conservative issue you were noticably quiet last week after Richard Grenell, someone ten times more Conservative than you, stepped down after weeks of attacks from the religious right.

  2. Don't let these leftists intimidate you, Matt. Stand firm and continue to show them for what they are!

  3. If a Republican is divorced and remarries does that make him or her a leftist?

I'm just trying to figure out how gay marriage is a left vs right issue that some people are insisting that it is.

I read in a crazy little document that all men were created equal. Some people don't seem to care for that document and if you disagree with them you are automatically a leftist.

  4. I never said it was a "conservative" issue. I said the Left usually accuses the right of being obsessed with social issues. And best I can tell, Curt, it's Team Obama doing their darndest to talk about anything other than the economy in 2012!

  5. Matt, it would be nice if more on the Right came out and condemned the way Richard Grennel was attacked by the lunatic fringe instead of following Mitts lead of cowardly keeping silent.

And you mention the Amendment in North Carolina, which cruelly bans even civil unions for lgbt families, was also drafted by Republicans.

Too bad Romney flip flopped and no longer stands for equality by signing the National Organization for Marriages stupid pledge. Because putting a discriminatory Amendement into the US Constitution is a surefire way to help the economy.

  6. The primary objective of this blog post was to point out the D's continue to bring up social issues that they know don't play out well for Republicans in the general population instead of dealing with the more significant issues of the day, particularly the economy, which Obama has handled poorly at best. Staying true to form with his fellows liberals, Curt himself further shifts the discussion to Republicans getting divorced, again more arguments that aren't going to bring down the unemployment rate, aren't going to help people to no longer have to rely on gov't assistance, etc.

  7. Curt,

I don't disagree that Romney is on the wrong side of this argument. This is very much a generation-based discussion (which the left has recognized), and I believe many of the younger conservatives agree with marriage equality.

That said, the left is using this issue and going on the morning talk shows, etc. as a distraction from the much more significant issues facing Americans today. While gay marriage is an important issue, I'm much more interested to hear how this economy is going to get fixed, when people will start getting jobs, when gas prices will be going down, how our gov't is handling the terrorists out there whose sole purpose for living is killing innocent people….If we were in the midst of a roaring economy, there was peace around the globe, world-leading education for our kids, than alright, I'd consider this issue to be critical in a presidential election. But at this point, I don't think it even cracks the top 10.

  8. Todd,

I wish Romney would have said what you just did instead of signing that stupid pledge. There is nothing bigger than promising to put an Amendment into the United States Constitution and using the Federal governemnt to limit the rights of individuals. That does nothing to help the economy or help people get jobs.

If the left, as you said, is using this as a distraction then the right has taken the bait.

There are much bigger issues out there but there is never a justification for discrimination. There is no reason we can't have equality and still focus on the economy.
