Christie isn’t the only one engaging this somewhat difficult topic. One of his potential 2016 rivals is also fully engaged.
In related news, Sens. Rand Paul and Patrick Leahy are leading a big push to grant federal judges great discretion in granting sentences below the mandatory minimums. There was a time in the 70s and 80s when criminal justice reform was a third rail. Broaching the topic could be political suicide. No more. It’s becoming a bipartisan issue as prison populations swell across the fruited plains. The only mainstream disagreement concerns the details.
