In related news, Sens. Rand Paul and Patrick Leahy are leading a big push to grant federal judges great discretion in granting sentences below the mandatory minimums. There was a time in the 70s and 80s when criminal justice reform was a third rail. Broaching the topic could be political suicide. No more. It’s becoming a bipartisan issue as prison populations swell across the fruited plains. The only mainstream disagreement concerns the details.
