The stars are continuing to align for Steve Lonegan, Save Jerseyans, as the former gubernatorial primary rival of Chris Christie takes advantage of an establishment candidate vacuum ahead of a special U.S. Senate primary in August.

Mike Donohue, head of the Cape May County GOP, is only the latest Republican chairman to throw his support behind Mayor Lonegan. Donohue’s backing and close relationship with Trenton will nevertheless add significant weight — and a sense of inevitability? – to the Lonegan campaign.

“After speaking with Mayor Lonegan this morning, I am excited to support his campaign,” said Donohue:

I have no doubt that there will be sharp contrasts with the opposition with Steve Lonegan as our candidate for United States Senate. I have had the pleasure of knowing Steve for several years now and have always admired his zeal for the founding principals of our nation. As the State Director of the New Jersey Chapter of Americans for Prosperity, he has been a vocal leader in the fight against higher taxes in New Jersey. I can’t tell you how great it would be to have Steve Lonegan shaking up the United States Senate and working for the people instead of business as usual in Washington. I am happy to lend my support to Mayor Lonegan in the August 13th Primary Election and look forward to working hard for his candidacy right through the Special Election in October.”

Lonegan also locked up the support of the GOP chairmen from Bergen and Camden counties over the past 48 hours.

  1. Alieta Eck for Senate. She is principled and has more integrity in her little finger, than Lonegan has in his whole body!
