As Trenton Democrats and some Republicans, too, continue to weigh increasing the state gas tax to shore up the transportation trust fund, down-ballot Republicans are beginning to do what we’ve been advocating for months, Save Jerseyans: running AGAINST the gas tax.
Among those higher-profile candidates who appreciate both the substantive and political imperative of an anti-hike position is John Mitchell (R-Bergen), running this year to reclaim his freeholder seat:
We welcome the trend! It’s a promising development.
Look: you can’t win an election (at least one in a competitive district) without a message, and that message better form a positive contrast with the candidate that you’re trying to beat. This is politics 101, folks. The gas tax provides such a golden opportunity; NJ GOP’ers in all 21 counties would be foolish to waste it.
