He won’t endorse the forthcoming Hard Rock Meadowlands proposal before he sees it, Save Jerseyans, but if a referendum to expand gaming beyond Atlantic City makes it to the ballot, Governor Chris Christie told NJ 101.5 last night that he will support it.
“So even though I have no role in the process because of the constitutional amendment the governor doesn’t play a role in it, but I certainly would be publicly supportive of getting this question done as quickly as we could so that we can proceed to expanding if that’s the will of the people, they need to decide whether or not to amend the constitution to expand gaming beyond Atlantic City,” the Governor told Eric Scott on Wednesday evening’s monthly Ask the Governor program. “I think that given the competition around us, it would be the right thing to do.”
The promise of new revenues is undoubtedly a factor; his support for the Democrat-led push, however, would open up a gulf between the Republican governor and an LD2 GOP 2015 ticket that’s building its campaign around opposing any such expansion (and blasting South Jersey Democrats for failing to oppose it).
